OBITUARY: Perle Griswold-Varnum, -c1910, Mitchell Co., Iowa #1 of 2 items Former Osager Dead Perle Griswold-Varnum Passed Away From Heart Failure at Freemont, Neb., last Saturday The relatives and many friends were shocked by a telegram saying Mrs. Perle Varnum had died at her home in Freemont, Neb., Saturday morning at 9:45 after an illness since Tuesday. She was of a cheerful and bright disposition, always ready with a kind word for anyone in affliction; always ready to give a helping hand in sickness and social affairs. Just a few weeks ago she entertained the Ladies' Aid of her town. She leaves many friends wherever she has lived during the thirteen years of her married life and before. She was the youngest and adopted daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Griswold. She leaves to mourn her loss; her husband, Ray Varnum; her dear little daughter, Zola, eleven years old the day of their mother's death; her father and mother; one sister, Mrs. Chas Hunt, of Seattle, Wash., brother, Bert J. Griswold, of Ft. Wayne, Ind., W. W., of Osage, Will Rattigan, of Sioux City, and Joe Rattigan, at present somewhere in the west. The funeral was held at the Methodist church here in Osage, Rev. F.W. Court officiating. Interment was made in our local cemetery in the family lot. Evening Tribune concerning her death: Succumbing suddenly to heart failure. Mrs. R.J. Varnum, wife of a traveling sales man for the Swift Packing Co., died this forenoon at her home at 351 East Third St. Mrs. Varnum came with her husband to Freemont from Blair about three years ago. She had been ill about a week, but her condition seemed to be improving and she had seemed particularly well this morning. The end came as a terrible shock to the family. A husband and one daughter, aged 11, are the immaculate surviving relatives. The body will be taken to her old home, Osage Ia., for burial.
