OBITUARY: John McSweeney, 1886-1961, Mitchell Co., Iowa John McSweeney Local Produce Man Dies Here Saturday Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Sacred Heart Catholic church for an Osage merchant, John McSweeney, 74, who died Saturday evening at Mitchell County Memorial hospital in Osage. Mr. McSweeney, co-owner of Farmers Produce with his wife and son Gerald, died following a long illness. Cause of death was hardening of the arteries. The Rev. Thomas Conroy, pastor, was in charge of the services. The family services were held Monday evening at the Champion Funeral Home, and burial was at Sacred Heart cemetery. John W. Sweeney was born in Mitchell County, June 28, 1886, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John McSweeney Sr. He received his education in the rural schools of the county. Mr. McSweeney and Catherine Clark were married Oct. 18, 1909. They established their home on a farm near Little Cedar where he farmed with his brother, Stewart. For the past 30 years he has been actively associated with the Farmers Produce in Osage. His partners were his wife and their only son, Gerald. He was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Catholic church, was a member of Holy Name society of church and had served as a director of the Osage Chamber of Commerce. Surviving are his wife, Catherine, their son, Gerald, two grandsons, John and Thomas, and a brother, Stewart, all of Osage. His parents preceded him in death.
