OBITUARY: Arlene Bernice (Pirie) Johnsten, 1907-2003, Mitchell Co., Iowa [ Mitchell County Press-News online - Posted Oct. 22, 2003 ] Arlene Bernice (Pirie) Johnsten A memorial service was held for Arlene Bernice Johnsten on Monday, Oct. 20, 2003 at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Great Falls, Montana. Burial will be at a later date at the Norway Cemetery, Norway, Iowa. Arlene died of cancer Oct. 13, 2003 at Peace Hospice at Great Falls. Arlene Johnsten was born Nov. 17, 1907 on a farm near Norway, Iowa to Dr. William and Maude Pirie. She graduated from high school in Springville, Iowa and graduated with an Elementary Education degree from the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa. She taught school at Radcliffe, Iowa, where she met Carsten Johnsten, who was the school principal. They were married in 1933 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Their first son Richard was also born in Norway, IA where Carsten was then school superintendent. A second son David, was born in Waterloo, Iowa and died in infancy. Her husband Carsten died in 1993. Carsten and Arlene lived in Osage, Iowa from 1947 to 1977, where Carsten was superintendent 25 years. Arlene was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and witnessed her Christian Faith throughout her life. Her survivors who were blessed by her life and will cherish her memory include a son Richard and his wife Margery; three grandchildren Christina, Jennifer and Christian; a nephew William Pirie and a niece Dee Ann Newman.
