OBITUARY: Alfred Pitzen, 1909-2003, Mitchell Co., Iowa [ Mitchell County-Press-News online - Posted Nov. 12, 2003 ] Alfred Pitzen Funeral service for Alfred Pitzen, 94, of Stacyville, were held Tuesday, November 11, 2003 at 10:30 am at Visitation Catholic Church, Stacyville, with Rev. Mark Reasoner officiating. Burial was in the Visitation Cemetery, Stacyville. Alfred died on November 6, 2003 at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage, Iowa. Alfred was born on August 30, 1909 to Fred and Christina (Smith) Pitzen. His marriage of 67 years to Mary Reding began on September 2, 1936 at Visitation Catholic Church, Stacyville. Alfred farmed his entire life, retiring to Stacyville in 1978. He always had an active part in farming, even after his retirement. In his retirement he enjoyed woodworking and traveling. He also loved watching his grandchildren in sports activities. Alfred was very involved with 4-H, serving as a leader for many years. The county fair was a very special part of his life as well as his families lives. Alfred was a 75 year member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, was an Iowa Holstein member, a Farm Bureau member, was a board member of the ASCS and received the Distinguished Holstein Service Award. Alfred is survived by his wife, Mary of Stacyville; two sons, Gene (Jane) Pitzen of Stacyville and Ronnie (Becky) of Stacyville; four daughters, Mary Jane (Jim) Mauer of Lisle, Illinois, Betty Ann (Marly) Stoltenberg of Mason City, Iowa, Carol (Vaughn) Rossum of Osage, Iowa, Rosalie (Doug) Malo of Brookings. South Dakota; daughter-in-law Vernie Pitzen of Austin, Minnesota; 25 grandchildren ; 26 great grandchildren; one brother, Robert Pitzen of Stacyville, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son James; three brothers, Paul, Lawrence and Bill; four sisters, Angela May, Gertrude Hartnell, Millie Pitzen and Martha Pitzen.
