OBITUARY: Marvel H. 'Slim' Shafer, 1918-1982, Mitchell County, Iowa [St. Ansgar Enterprise, 18 FEB 1982] M. H. (Slim) Shafer Funeral Services Held Here Monday Funeral services for M. H. (Slim) Shafer, 63, who passed away February 12 at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home, were held Monday, February 15 at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home. Father John Smith officiated and burial was in the St. Ansgar City Cemetery. Marvel (Slim) Shafer was born June 15, 1918 at Holyolk, Colo., and he attended school there. Slim came to the St. Ansgar area in 1954 and made his home with Ann and Henry Lievrouw and their family. Slim entered University hospital at Iowa City on December 7, from which he was returned to the Mitchell County Memorial hospital. He then entered the Stacyville Nursing Home where he was a resident until his death. Slim was employed in construction at various jobs in the St. Ansgar area and also worked as a farmhand for the Hansen brothers. He liked to pick up cans along the roadsides and also was an avid fisherman. He is survived by his father, John Shafer in California; one brother, Norman, a half brother, Wayne, two half sisters, Phyliss and Joan, and uncles and aunts in Broseley, Mo., Sterling and Brush, Colo., and many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death was his mother; and two half brothers, Ralph and Clyde, who died in the service of their country.
