OBITUARY: Mildren Spaanum Viskocil, 1923-1966, Mitchell Co., Iowa Funeral Held Tuesday Morning for Mrs. Edward Viskocil, 43, Of Osage Funeral services were held Tuesday morning for Mrs. Edward Viskocil, 43, wife of the Osage chief of police, who died early Saturday at Mitchell County Memorial hospital. Mrs. Viskocil had been ill for several months with a malignancy that caused her death. In charge of the services at Sacred Heart Catholic church were the Rev. Fr. Thomas J. Conroy, pastor, and the Rev. Fr. Lloyd Reuter, assistant pastor, Rosary was at the Champion Funeral Home Monday evening, and burial was in the Sacred Heart cemetery. Mildred S. Spaanum was born in West Cedar Township, Mitchell County, Feb. 24, 1923, the daughter of Adolf E. and Sadie Young Spaanum. She grew to womanhood on the family farm, attending the rural school in West Cedar, and graduating from Osage high school in 1940. She was also graduated from Hamilton Business college in Mason City, worked six years as supervisor of the personnel department of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington, D.C., and was employed one year in the office of Strategic Services in Washington, D.C., for which she won an award for commendation. Returning to Osage, she was employed five years as a telephone operator. Mildred was united in marriage to Edward Viskocil Jan. 23, 1952 at Sacred Heart church. They lived in California one year, and in Osage. Mrs. Viskocil was an art student and hobbyist, studying under the Famous Artists' studio. She also studied English and journalism under the University of Minnesota. She was a public stenographer and served as assistant to Fred Hanson, secretary of the Mitchell county fair board for six years. During the past months she taught arts and crafts in Osage community high school on a part time basis. As a member of Sacred Heart Catholic church, Mrs. Viskocil was active in affairs of Sacred Heart guild, was past-president of St. Francis Third ward circle, and was a member of St. Gerard study club. She also assisted with community affairs including annual money drives. Surviving are: her husband, Edward, three children, James Edward, Ann Maria and Therese, at home; her mother, Mrs. Sadie Spaanum, Osage; two sisters, Mrs. Orland Rossum (Ruth) of rural Osage, Mrs. Orville Talburtt (Irene) of New Haven, Conn., and one aunt, Miss Hattie Spaanum, Osage.
