OBITUARY: Silas G. Tubbs, -1896, Mitchell Co., Iowa Item #1 (of 4) Silas G. Tubbs Obituary The news of the death of Mr. Silas Tubbs by accident, in the Itasca County pineries gloom over the entire community. Mr. T had long been a resident of Sherburn but lately had removed to Charles City Iowa. Where less than a year ago he lost his wife, a daughter of A.M. Packard of this place. With his two little girls he had come back to us and a short time ago went north with R.C Alsworth and others to work for the winter at logging where he lost his life. The body was sent directly to Charles City for interment where the two little orphans will be cared for by their uncle. Truly some people seem to have more then their share of misfortunes, but the all-wise Father knows how to make it even. Sherburn Minnesota, February 28, 1896 (Added note by Kathy Pike: This should read "Osage" and not Charles City. The Uncle mentioned was Mr. Charles J. Tubbs of Osage) Item #2 Silas G. Tubbs Obituary The Funeral of Silas G. Tubbs occurred Monday at Mitchell at the Methodist Church, but as he was a resident of this place until a short time ago we take the liberty to mention this in our letter. He and his family resided here until the death of his wife, which occurred last July. Soon after this he went to Sherburn Minnesota and about a month ago to the pineries in Itasca where on the nineteenth of this month he lost his life by being struck by a falling log, dieing in a few days. He leaves two little children, a mother, brother, and sister to mourn his loss. They have the sympathy of all in their bereavement. Press, Osage Iowa Thursday February 27, 1896 Item #4 [Osage News 1896] Silas Tubbs Death By Accident Rev. Wm. Cummings, who made us a call Monday afternoon, informed us of the death of Mr. Silas Tubbs by an accident in the pineries of Minnesota on Tuesday of last week. Mr. Tubbs was helping to stack logs and the fellow above him failed to get hold at the proper time which let the log fly back and roll over Mr. Tubbs, causing internal injuries from which he died Thursday morning. The company did everything possible for his relieve, taking him sixty miles to the hospital at Grand Rapids. His brother-in-law, Mr. Packard, brought the remains to Mitchell where the funeral was held Monday morning by Rev. Cummings of the M.E. Church of which he was a member. A sad feature of his death is the fact that it leaves two little girls, aged 4 and 6 years, doubly orphaned, their mother having died last June. Besides the children there are other relatives, among them his mother, and a brother, Mr. Charles Tubbs, of Rock township. The funeral of Silas G. Tubbs occurred Monday at Mitchell at the Methodist Church, but as he was a resident of this place until a short time ago we take the liberty to mention this in our letter. He and his family resided here until the death of his wife, which occurred last July. Soon after this he went to Sherburne, Minnesota, and about a month ago to the pineries in Itaska county where on the 19th of this month he lost his life by being struck by a falling long, dying in a few days. He leaves two little children, a mother, brother and sister to mourn his loss. They have the sympathy of all in their bereavement. ------------------------------------------------------------------ [Submitted by Kathy Pike, Austin, MN, July 2003] Copyright Kathy McAlister Pike, 2003
