OBITUARY: Verna Burtch Tubbs, 1885-1965, Mitchell Co., Iowa Verna Burtch Tubbs 80, Died August 8 Funeral services for Mrs. Verna Tubbs, 80, of Floyd were held August 11, at Grace Methodist Church in Floyd. Mrs. Tubbs died Aug. 8, at the Osage Nursing Home where she was a resident since the death of her husband. Verna True Burtch was born Jan. 17, 1885, in Burr Oak township, Mitchell County, the daughter of pioneer parents, J. G. and Fannie Bush Burtch. She remained in that area during her childhood. She was graduated from Osage high school and later took a business course at Cedar Valley seminary, an institution founded by her uncle, Alva Bush. She taught in the rural schools of Mitchell County. She was married to Clayton Tubbs Nov. 12, 1908. In his work as a well driller she lived in many parts of the community. She was baptized at the Baptist church in Osage, Nov. 8, 1904, and remained a member of that church for 40 years. She was an affiliate of Grace Methodist, Floyd, since 1934, where she was active in women's work of the church and in the music department. She also had been a member of Shakespearean study club while she lived in Osage. She is survived by one grandson, Robert Tubbs of Phoenix, Ariz. Mrs. Tubbs was preceded in death by her husband, Clayton, her parents, and one adopted son, Wendell Burtch Tubbs, two children who died in infancy, several brothers and sisters.
