OBITUARIES: E.M. (Mat) and Jessie M. Newhouse 1862/1873-1937, Mitchell, Iowa #1 OBITUARY: Jessie M. (Terpstra) Newhouse, 1873-1937 McIntire and vicinity was both shocked and grieved Friday when the word came that Mr. and Mrs. Mat Newhouse and a car from Lake Mills, Iowa, had collided at the Siple corner east of McIntire and that Mrs. Newhouse had been instantly killed and Mr. Newhouse seriously injured and taken to the hospital in New Hampton, Iowa. Jessie M. Terpstra was born November 5, 1873 in the country of Holland, and came to the United States at the age of 8 years. She was united in marriage to Elijah M. Newhouse in the year of 1890 and lived in Nebraska, later moving to Colfax, Iowa, coming to McIntire in February 1910 where they had resided since. There were three children born to this union, one daughter, Mary preceding her in death in the year 1917. Surviving are her husband, Elijah M. Newhouse and two sons, Mayo and Paul and their families, including twelve grandchildren; two brothers, George M. Terpstra, of Colfax, Iowa, and Paul M. Terpstra, of Long Beach, California, and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held in the Baptist church in McIntire, Tuesday afternoon, October 5, conducted by Rev. L.D. Eaton, pastor, and Rev. E. Bodenham. The body was interred in the family lot in Wayne Cemetery. #2 OBITUARY: E. M. "Mat" Newhouse, 1862-1937, Mitchell Co., Iowa Our community is again in mourning. This time we record the passing of E.M. Newhouse, who was seriously injured in the auto accident October 1, 1937, when his wife was instantly killed. That day Mr. Newhouse was taken to the hospital at New Hampton, Iowa. There he received the best of care but to no avail. He passed to his reward October 7, 1937. Elijah Madison Newhouse was born at Pleasant Grove, Iowa, February 16, 1862. He was united in marriage to Jessie M. Terpstra in the year of 1890, and lived in Nebraska, later moving to Colfax, Iowa, coming to McIntire in February, 1910, where they had resided since. There were three children born to this union, one daughter, Mary, preceding him in death in the year 1917. Surviving are his two sons, Mayo and Paul and their families, including 12 grandchildren; one brother, Frank Newhouse, of Broken Bow, Nebraska; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Beckman of Broken Bow, Nebraska; Mrs. Laura George, of Escondido, California; and Mrs. Stella Denham of Massena, Iowa, and many other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held in the Baptist Church at McIntire, Iowa, Monday afternoon, October 11, 1937, conducted by Rev. Eaton, pastor, and Rev. Bodenham.
