Julia Spaanum Hunchis, the daughter of Carl and Laura (Johnson) Spaanum was born May 27, 1916, in Osage. She graduated from Osage High School and continued her education at Cornell College. Ill health caused her to return to her Osage home. She found employment at Burns Insurance Agency where she worked as a bookkeeper until her marriage. Julia married Fred Hunchis in 1951 and later adopted his four children. She then became the bookkeeper for The Hunchis Cattle Company. Julia was a life member of the United Methodist Church, and an active member of the Naomi Circle. It was only recently that she gave up the position as treasurer. She was a 50 year member of Chapter AW of P.E.O. Julia enjoyed golf, playing bridge and listening to the big band sounds. She was an avid sports fan, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Bulls. She was keenly interested in her home town and was looking forward to the return of RAGBRAI and the running of the Olympic Torch through Osage. Julia took great pride in the varied activities of her grandchildren and would clip articles about them from the newspaper. Survivors include her children and their spouses: Marianne Reynolds and her husband, William; Kathleen Holden and her husband, Lowell, all of Burnsville, Minn.; John Hunchis and his wife, Carol, of Clear Lake, and William Hunchis and his wife, Bettie, of Edina, Minn.; 15 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
