OBITUARY: H.B. Nickerson, 1909-1996, Mitchell County, Iowa [ From Mason City Globe Gazette, Mason City, Iowa, Jan. 15, 1996 ] H.B. Nickerson ST. ANSGAR--H.B. Nickerson, 86, of St. Ansgar, died Saturday (January 13, 1996) at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church, St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Ted W. Stowers officiating. Burial will be in Newburg Cemetery, Carpenter. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home, 207 S. School St., St. Ansgar, and prior to service time Tuesday at the church. Memorials may be given in care of the Alzheimer's Research Fund, Marshfield, Wis. H.B. Nickerson was born Aug. 11, 1909, in Marshall County, a son of William and Vivian May (Poland) Nickerson. He married Rose Gerlach on Feb. 19, 1930, on the Gerlach farm southeast of Carpenter. They lived in eastern Iowa in the Anamosa area working at various logging camps, returning to Mitchell County in 1935. He worked as a cream hauler and then purchased a farm east of St. Ansgar where he spent most of his life. He started Nickerson Farm Seeds in 1966 which he sold to Max Patterson in 1976 when he retired and moved to Osage. He served the community through active roles in the Soil Conservation Commission, Farm Bureau and St. Ansgar School Board, as well as church activities. Survivors include his wife, Rose Nickerson of St. Ansgar; two daughters, Joanne Borchardt, Holland, and Mary Conzemius, St. Paul, Minn.; three sons, Verle Nickerson, Osage, Gene Nickerson, Phoenix, Ariz., and H. James Nickerson, Marshfield, Wis.; one sister, Ruth Roehr, Carpenter; and 21 grandchildren and 30 great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
