OBITUARY: Roger Stevenson, 1938-2004, Mitchell Co., Iowa [Adapted from Mitchell County Press-News online - Posted Sept. 29, 2004] Roger Stevenson A Celebration of Life service for Roger W. Stevenson, 66, of Waverly, Iowa, was held Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home located in Waverly. His body was cremated. Memorials may be directed to the family or to the Waverly Quality of Life fund in care of the family. Roger died at his home Wednesday evening, Sept. 22, 2004. Roger W. Stevenson was born Feb. 17, 1938, in Howard County, Iowa near Riceville, the son of William F. and Frieda Timmerman Stevenson. He attended country school near his home and then the Riceville High School. In 1956 he was united in marriage to Peggy Zobel. The couple moved to Beloit, Wisc., and Roger attended Beloit Vocational School. He then worked for the Warner Electric Brake and Clutch Company in Beloit for a time before working for a year at the Sherwin Williams Company in Charles City. They then moved to Osage where Roger owned and operated Stevenson Hardware and Appliance. In 1966 he ceased the operation and went to work as a machinist for Oliver Corporation in Charles City. In 1969 he was appointed County Conservation Director for Mitchell County, a position he held until 1976 when he was elected as County Auditor for Mitchell County. In 1980 he was hired as the Planning Consultant for the North Iowa Area Council of Governments. It was in 1986 that Roger and Peggy moved to Waverly. The couple was later divorced. Roger served the City of Waverly as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Waverly Economic Development Company until retiring in 1999. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant twin daughters and one step-grandson Matt Nicholson. Roger's survivors include his three daughters Carol (John) Welsh of Hereford, Ariz., Cheryl (Kevin) Swarthout of Stewartville, Minn., Diane (Ron) Nicholson of Waverly; his former wife, Peggy Miller of Waterloo; eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild and one sister, Ellen (Larry) Davis of Elma, Iowa.
