OBITUARY: Augusta Wohlert Christiansen Ruther, 1881-1944, Mitchell Co., Iowa Funeral services for Mrs. August Ruther, 63, were held Sunday afternoon at Clarence, IA and Monday at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church southwest of Osage. The Rev. C.B. Gunderson conducted last rites. Burial was made in the Rock Creek Lutheran cemetery. The six sons of the deceased were casket bearers. Mrs. Ruther, nee Augusta Wohlert, was born on March 21, 1881 in Holstein, Germany. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Germany before coming to America with her family in 1895. She was married to Hans Christiansen on February 25, 1903. Six sons were born to this union: Alvin, Carl, John, and Glen all of Mitchell County; Private First Class Herbert, serving with the U.S. Army at Clarinda; and Lawrence, Seaman First Class of the United States Navy, at Norfolk, Virginia. All six sons survive her. Her husband preceded her in death in 1935. On December 2, 1937, she was united in marriage to August Ruther of Clarence, IA and since that time has made her home in Clarence. Mrs. Ruther underwent an operation on November 15th. Her condition was not considered serious until last week when her strength gradually failed. She died on Friday, December 8, 1944. Mrs. Ruther was a member of St. John’s Lutheran church and was active in various organizations of the congregation. Copyright 2004, Steve Norby
