OBITUARY: Amund Sponheim, 1874-1945, Mitchell County, Iowa Amund Sponheim Funeral services for Amund Sponheim, 71, were held Saturday afternoon, January 20, 1945 at the Shelledy Funeral Home and at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church. Burial was made in the Riverview cemetery south of St. Ansgar, IA. Mr. Sponheim died of a heart attack last Thursday morning as he was entering the Oliver plant in Charles City to start work for the day. He had suffered from a heart ailment for some time. Amund Sponheim was born January 16, 1874 in Ulvik, Hardanger, Norway. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church of his community and attended the neighborhood school where he received special training in woodwork. He came with his parents to this country in 1891 and worked on farms near St. Ansgar for several years. He spent 12 years in Chicago serving as a motorman on a streetcar most of the time. In 1905, he went to the west coast where he worked as a carpenter with different construction companies, one year being spent in Alaska. On July 5, 1909, at Vancouver, British Columbia, he was married to Helena Girtveit, also from Hardanger. They moved to Columbus, North Dakota in 1914 where they farmed for twenty-one years, the last twelve years being drought years. He came back to Mitchell County in 1936 and spent his last years with different relatives and working in the neighborhood. Since last April, he had been employed in the woodworking department of the Oliver Company at Charles City. His wife preceded him in death on September 18, 1939. Six brothers: Knut, Haldor, Magnus, Ole, Helge, and Endre and two sisters, Mrs. Lars Eidnes and Mrs. Kari Ellingson also preceded him in death. Six nephews: Ingvald, Arthur, Melvin and Selmer Sponheim, Elmer Eidnes and Andrew Ellingson were pallbearers. Coming from a distance were John P. Westerheim of St. Paul, Clarence Sponheim of Waterloo, Hans Borsheim of Cedar Falls, Marjorie Lunde Allison and Margaret Sponheim of Minneapolis. Copyright 2004, Steve Norby
