OBITUARY: Richard A. Thompson, 1936-1997, Mitchell County, Iowa [Based on Obituary in Mason City Globe Gazette; July 29, 1997] Richard A. Thompson Richard A. Thompson, age 61, a resident of the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa, and formerly of Osage, Iowa, died Sunday, July 27, 1997, at the Marshalltown Medical Surgical Center. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 30th, at the Chapel at the Iowa Veterans Home, with burial to follow at the home cemetery. The Estel Perrin Avey Funeral Home, 212 E. State St., Marshalltown, was in charge of arrangements. Richard was born in Mitchell, Iowa, on Jan. 14, 1936, the son of Archie and Wanda (Knight) Thompson. Reared and educated in Osage, Iowa, he attended schools there. In 1954, he enlisted in the United States Army and served until 1956. He later re-enlisted in the Army in 1962. In 1978, he came to the Veterans Home, where he has lived since. His memberships include the AMVETS of which he was a former District Commander and a former Post Commander; in 1996, he became a lifetime member. He was also a long-time member of the Frank Lewis Glick Post 46 of the American Legion. Survivors include his mother, Wanda Thompson of Osage; two sisters, Dorothy (Mrs. Leonard) Mostek of Mitchell, and Janis Leegaard of Forest City; two brothers, David Thompson of Kearney, Neb., and Randy Thompson of LeRoy, Minn.
