Mrs. Creelman was born in Nova Scotia January 4, 1847; the daughter of John and Mary Gummell. She received her education in the normal school where she was born, and in the Cedar Valley Seminary, Iowa, under the wise instruction of Prof. Alva Bush, its beloved founder. As an educator Mrs. C. was remarkably successful, teaching before she came west, and until her marriage after she came when not attending the Seminary. Hoping to escape the scourge of her father's family, consumption, in September 1865, she came to Iowa, and for many years it appeared as though the hope was to be realized. But alas the germ of the fell destroyer began to manifest its presence and power; and although all that a loving husband could do was done to avert the threatened danger, it slowly but surely accomplished its sad work, sapping the foundation of a beautiful life and bearing to the grave a deary beloved wife and mother. It was powerless however to mar the spirit, for as she stepped down into the stream which for a time must separate her from her dear ones on earth, she shed upon all, and especially upon her beloved husband and children a halo of joyous triumph. Mrs. Creelman was married by Pro. Bush, April 9, 1868 and leaves with her husband, four promising children, two sons and two daughters, to mourn the loss for she was indeed an amiable wife and indulgent mother. Mrs C. was an honored member of the Congregational church, Osage, who also mourn her death, as does the entire community by who she was held in highest esteem. Rev. Mr. Moody preached an excellent sermon at her funeral, and loving hands tenderly bore her remains away to rest in a peaceful hope of a blessed immortality, in a realm where sorrow shall flee away, and pain and parting be forever unknown.
