OBITUARY: Walter Laverne Dieterich, 1906-1977, Mitchell County, Iowa Walter Laverne Dieterich (St. Ansgar Enterprise, St. Ansgar, Iowa; Feb. 3, 1977) Funeral services for Walter L. Dieterich, 70, who died at his home January 22, 1977, were held January 25 at Immanuel Lutheran church with the Rev. N.E. Betke officiating. Walter Laverne Dieterich was born at St. Ansgar February 21, 1906, the son of Henry and Ida nee' Triechel Dieterich. He was baptized February 28, 1906 at Immanuel Lutheran church by the Rev. Wm. Janzow, Walter's sponsors were Mrs. John Groth, Herman Dieterich and Christine Dieterich. On May 25, 1919 he confirmed his baptismal vows, instructed and confirmed by the Rev. Paul Brammer. He was educated in the St. Ansgar schools, spent six years in the State of Montana during the 1930s as a dry land wheat farmer and sheep herder. He then returned to St. Ansgar where he was employed as a cream hauler for the St. Ansgar Creamery. In May 1942 he entered the U.S. Army and saw action in Europe. He was wounded during service in France and received the Purple Heart June, 14, 1944. December 17, 1944 he was captured by the enemy and served as a prisoner of war in Germany until April 13, 1945. Following his return he was united in marriage to Adele Janzow July 26, 1946 by the Rev. Ted Eickelberg. This union was blessed with three children; David, Dorian and Richard. Walter was engaged in farming and continued to work as a cream hauler for eight years. In 1971 he and his wife retired from the farm and moved to St. Ansgar. Mr. Dieterich served on the Carpenter school board for two years, he was a member of the Voter's Assembly at Immanuel church and had served the congregation as a school deacon and also served on the building committee for the Immanuel Lutheran education unit. Mr. Dieterich is survived by his wife, Adele; two sons, David of St. Ansgar and Richard, serving with the U.S. Marine Corps in Yorktown, Va. One daughter, Mrs. Norman (Dorian) Atwood of Fairfield; granddaughters Nicholle and Clarissa Dieterich of St. Ansgar; a brothers, Arthur; stepmother, Mrs. Olga Dieterich; two sistesr, Mrs. Art (Irma) Krueger and Mrs. Herbert (Lucille) Marcks, both of St. Ansgar; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother and father. Burial was in the Immanuel Lutheran cemetery, St. Ansgar, Iowa. For non-commercial use only
