OBITUARY: Bertha Augusta (Frank) Ellgen, 1885-1978, Mitchell County, Iowa Bertha Augusta Frank Ellgen (St. Ansgar Enterprise, St. Ansgar, Iowa; Mar. 16, 1978) Funeral services for Mrs. Bertha A. Ellgen, 93, who died at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center March 7, were held March 10 at Deer Creek Lutheran church, Carpenter, with the Rev. Arden Backman officiating. Bertha Augusta (Frank) Ellgen was born March 1, 1885, the youngest of 10 children born to Heinrich and Henrietta (Haase) Frank in Carpenter. She was baptized east of Grafton and confirmed March 26, 1899 at the Emmanuel Lutheran church in Grafton. After graduating from the Grafton German school, she married Clifford Ellgen in 1909 at Deer Creek Lutheran church, Carpenter. The Ellgens made their home in Carpenter where they operated a barbershop and jewelry store until Mr. Ellgen's death in 1954. Mrs. Ellgen continued living in Carpenter until 1972 when she became a resident of the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center. Mrs. Ellgen was preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers: August, Carl Julius (who died at birth), Jacob Herman, Christian Henry, William Carl, Carl Fredrich and Ludwig Fredrich; two sisters, Wileminia and Mathilda; her husband, Clifford; and an infant son. She is survived by two sons, Louis Ellgen of Akron, Penn. And Clifford Ellgen of Clear Lake; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Burial was in the Carpenter cemetery with Rev.
