OBITUARY: Edward Johnson, 1869-1948, Mitchell County, Iowa Edward Johnson Funeral services were conducted Saturday May 29, 1948 at the Champion Funeral Home for Edward E. Johnson, who lost his life in an automobile accident near his home in Springer, New Mexico on Monday May 24. The Rev. Alvin N. Rogness of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City, Iowa, was in charge of the service. Burial was made in the Osage cemetery. Elai Edward Johnson was born in Cedar Township, Mitchell County, Iowa, on March 2, 1869 to John N. and Jorand (Jane) Johnson. There he spent his boyhood attending to rural school and later the Cedar Valley Seminary in Osage. In 1891 he was married to Ella Sheehan. As a young man, his first position was with the Stacy department store. Then he was employed by Leuthold-Evans clothing store, after which, for 18 years he had his own clothing store in Osage. After two years in the real estate business in Minneapolis, Mr. Johnson and his family moved to Springer, NM where he lived the rest of his life. Funeral services were held in Springer Wednesday where scores of people paid tribute to the memory of a man who had played a vital part in many public improvements and who had consistently been a community leader. Last fall Mr. Johnson paid his last visit to the Osage and Mason City area, where, besides a number of relatives, he still had a host of friends. Survivors include: his wife, Mrs. Ella Johnson, Los Angeles, CA; two daughters, Lorna Johnson of Santa Fe, NM and Mrs. Katherine Cunningham of Los Angeles; a sister, Mrs. Belle A. Carroll of Mason City, IA; a grandson, Marshall Edward Johnson, Jr.; and a granddaughter, Tanya Cunningham, together with nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Nickolai and Martin, and one sister, Mrs. E.E. Smalley; also an infant daughter, Nora, and a son, Marshall, who died in 1947.
