OBITUARY: Marshall Kathan, 1906-2005, Osage, Mitchell County, Iowa Original version posted on www.mcpress.com - July 13, 2005 Marshall Kathan Graveside services for Marshall Kathan, 99, were held at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on Wednesday, June 22, 2005. Marshall passed away on June 19, 2005. Marshall Kathan was born June 1, 1906 in Osage, Iowa to Charles and Emma Kathan. He had been a resident of Albuquerque, New Mexico, for thirty-two years since his retirement. Marshall was a 1924 graduate of Osage High School, was a graduate of Iowa State Teachers College and later attended the National Academy of Art in Chicago, the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, DC, and studied in Paris for one year. He was a World War II veteran, having achieved the rank of Captain in the U.S. Army. His career in art involved stage sets and costume drawing and he spent many years working for the Government as an art illustrator for the U.S. Weather Bureau, and the Dept. of Labor as a technical illustrator. Preceding Marshall in death were his parents, a brother, Maurice Kathan, and a sister, Grace Shumate. His survivors include a niece, Colleen Gast, and a nephew, Gregory Kathan of Iowa, and many grandnieces and grandnephews; also by his close friends Ray and Millie Miller of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
