OBITUARY: Mrs. Alma G. (Brandt) Sweeney, 1915-2005, Mitchell Co., Iowa [ Original version Published on www.mcpress.com Nov. 23, 2005] Alma G. Sweeney NEW HAVEN, IOWA--A Mass of Christian Burial for Alma G. Sweeney, age 89, of New Haven, was held Friday, Nov. 18, 2005, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in New Haven with Rev. Ray E. Atwood officiating. Burial was in St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery in New Haven. Alma died Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City. Alma was born November 20, 1915, in Douglas Township, Mitchell County, Iowa, to Peter D. and Evelyn E. (Kleckner) Brandt. She was united in marriage to Clarence Mellen Sweeney on August 12, 1931, in Waterloo, Iowa. Alma and Clarence farmed all of their lives north of New Haven, Iowa. Alma was a life long member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in New Haven, and a member of St. Peter's Altar Society, where she was a past president. Alma was also a member of the NABA Women's Life Organization. She was a very social person, enjoying card clubs and bus trips. Alma loved sewing, cooking, and gardening, especially her rose garden. She loved politics and was very adamant about her views. Plans were in the making for her 90th birthday on November 20th. Alma squeezed every bit of enjoyment out of life. Preceding her in death were her parents, Peter and Evelyn Brandt; her husband Clarence Sweeney in January of 2001; and her sister Betty Guthart and Betty's husband Wendell Guthart. Alma is survived by a daughter LaVonne (Jim) Regan of Avon, Ind., and her three sons, Douglas, David, and Thomas Johnson; two sons, Gene (Dorthy) Sweeney of New Haven, and their children, Coreen, Brett, Michele, Sean, Gale, and Ivy; Don (Sue) Sweeney of New Haven, and their children, Angela, Melissa, and Christopher; and 13 great-grandchildren.
