OBITUARY: Samuel J. Miles, 1823-1904, Mitchell County, Iowa [ Osage News-December 8, 1904 ] MILES Samuel J. Miles was born in Fairview county, Pennsylvania, May 10, 1823 and died in LeRoy, Minnesota, December 2nd, 1904, aged 81 years, 6 months and 22 days. Mr. Miles' death was sudden and unexpected. He was retiring for the night and began to cough when hemorrhage of the lungs started, from which he died in less than five minutes. His sudden departure was a great shock to the dear ones who cared for him and ministered to his wants, but in his going he was spared a prolonged suffering. Mr. Miles was married in October, 1842 to Miss Sarah Burch, who survives him. To this union was born twelve children, six boys and six girls. Seven of the twelve are still living. Clement and Frank are in Canada, Arthur resides at Winona, Minn.; Elwin resides in Iowa, near McIntire; Effie (Mrs. Atwood) also lives near McIntire, Iowa; Florence (Mrs. Shumway) lives in Beloit, Wis., and Carrie (Mrs. Weise) lives in LeRoy. It was at her home that Mr. and Mrs. Miles were taking their comfort together in their old age. Mr. and Mrs. Miles moved to Verona, Wis., in 1846, and made that their home until 1901, when they came to LeRoy. Soon afterward they took up their residence at Verona. Mr Miles was converted and united with the Methodist church. He was an office-bearer and active in the Sunday school work of this church until his eyesight failed, about five years ago. The bereaved relatives have the sympathy of many friends, but as we sorrow in our separation we rejoice in the hope that when we meet to know, even as we are known, he will be one to greet us.
