OBITUARY: Mary Jean (Saraga) Vulk, 1922-2005, Mitchell County, Iowa [Original version posted on www.mcpress.com, Oct. 5, 2005] Mary Jean Vulk Funeral services for Mary Jean Vulk, age 83, of Lake Mills, Iowa, and formerly of Mitchell, Iowa, were held on Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2005, at the Faith Lutheran Church in Mitchell, with Rev. Wayne Ellingson officiating. Burial was at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Mitchell. Mary died Friday, Sept. 30, 2005, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills. Mary Jean was born in Mitchell County, Iowa, on June 25, 1922, to Mato and Anna (Slaichert) Saraga. She married Lewis Vulk, Jr. in 1940, and they lived in Chicago for six years, where they were employed in a defense plant. They moved back to Mitchell County in 1948, where she resided until the death of her husband in 1990. Mary Jean moved to Osage, Iowa, and later to Lake Mills, Iowa. She was a member of the Mitchell Faith Lutheran Church since 1954, where she was very active in Circle, World Relief, and Council. She was also a member of Lodge Velehrad of Mason City. Her hobbies included flower and vegetable gardening, Czech pastries, reading, concerts, movies, and especially football. Preceding her in death were her husband, Lewis Vulk, Jr.; her parents; her sister, Anne (Setka) Billy; her brother, John Saraga, Sr.; an infant son, Lewis Allen Vulk; and a great-grandson, Devon Lars Vulk. Mary Jean is survived by a son, Gregory Vulk and wife Julie (Niess) Vulk of Decorah; a daughter, Francine Vulk of Lake Mills; grandchildren Theone (Steve) Quattlebaum of Spencer; Jason and wife Jody (Surber) Vulk of Saylorville; Ryan Vulk and girlfriend, Dana Fredrich of San Francisco, Calif.; also, Elizabeth Vulk of Osage, mother of Theone, Jason, and Ryan. Two great-granddaughters, Mary Beth and Malarie Quattlebaum; a great-grandson, Lewis Hurschel Vulk. Also three granddaughters, Tanya Root, Tiffany Smith, and Torey Keck; great-grandchildren, Jamison, Sophia, and Whitaker Root, Cole Smith, Austin, Josephine and Ira James Keck. Also surviving are her brothers Stanley Setka and wife Ruth of Riceville, and Mato Frank Saraga, Jr. of San Clemente, Calif.; two sisters, Lily Pollock and husband Bruce of Springfield, Ohio and Betty Klee of Green Bay, Wisc.; and many nieces and nephews.
