OBITUARY: John O. Whipple, 1831-1904, Mitchell Co., Iowa [Mitchell Co. Press., Osage, Iowa] John O. Whipple John O. Whipple was born April 28, 1831 in Springfield, Vermont, and died at his home in Rock township, April 13, 1904. In 1836 he came west but returned again after about 10 years to his old home. In 1877 he returned again and settled in Mitchell for one year when he came to Rock township, where he continued to reside until his death. On Dec. 24, 1863 in Mitchell, he was married to Celia Franham. Mr. and Mrs. Whipple journeyed together for more than forty years. Five children were born to them, four of whom are still living, two sons, Frank of Red Wing, Minn., and Herman of Osage, and two daughters, Mrs. Luva Torney and Mrs. Kate Campbell. There are also five grand children. One brother, Charles, and one sister, Mrs. Kate Fairbanks, both of Weatherfield, Vt., survive him. Mr. Whipple was reared in a Christian home, his people being Congregationalists, and the impression of his early home remained with him. He was a quiet, unassuming man who loved his home and seldom left it, tho' guests found there a hospitable welcome. Only once has he been in town in five years. For some 18 years he has been in feeble health. Though for the most part he has been able to do but little. The funeral service conducted by Rev. D. L. Coon was held at the home on Saturday and the body was laid to rest in the cemetery at Mitchell.
