M. CARRITT 1930 Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Carritt of Turin, pioneers of Monona county celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary at the F. W. Carritt home in Soldier, November 6th. This was a double celebration for Mr. Carritt as he came to Monona county 71 years ago on Nov. 5th. He came here from Wisconsin with his parents. He is now 76 years old. When Mr. Carritt came to Monona county there were no railroads in Western Iowa. They did their trading twice a year at Gainesville, where the city of Council Bluffs now stands. They made one trip in the fall and one in the spring. Only the –o trips during a year to buy their supply of food and clothing. Boats landed at Gainesville with these supplies which were brought from St. Louis. It took two weeks with an(sic) team to make the trip. Mr. Carritt says there were plenty of deer, beavers and wild turkey here when he first came to Monona county. MRS. J. M. CARRITT Mrs. Carritt remembers well when she made the trip here from Oregon with her father, the late J. A. Moad of Onawa. Part of this trip was made in a covered wagon and the balance by train on account of having to cross dangerous Indian territory. Mr. and Mrs. Carritt are the proud parents of eight children. All are married and living in Monona county at the present time. They are Mrs. George Chambers of Mapleton, Tom Carritt of Turin, F. W. Carritt of Soldier, Mrs. G. O. Britton of Soldier, Mrs. Melvin Lee of Soldier, Mrs. Leonard Hedum of Moorhead, Lynn Carritt of Soldier and Louise Carritt, Turin. Mr. and Mrs. Carritt lived on a farm one half mile north of Soldier until about two years ago when they retired from the farm and moved to Turin. Both Mr. and Mrs. Carritt are enjoying good health.
