Col. Marvin Butcher Onawa Democrat – March 13, 2003 Lt. Col. Marvin L. Butcher, 79, passed away Thursday, February 20, 2003 in Covina, CA. He was born November 5, 1923 to Alfred and Helen Butcher in Iowa, the second of eight children. Raised and schooled in Onawa until he entered the United States Army during World War II where he served with the infantry in the South Pacific. He remained in the Army serving with pride for over 25 years. He fought in the Korean War and served five tours in Viet Nam as a member of the 7th Calvary(sic) Tank Division, becoming a highly decorated officer with numerous medals and meritorious awards. He was, preceded in death by his son, Michael, parents, brothers Walter John (Demps) and Oval (Ponch) Butcher. Surviving are his wife, Tseng, daughters Mary (Gabriel), Covina, CA, Glenna, Sue and Christine and son Bruce (Carol) Jasper, MO; brothers Earl (Lola) Casa Grande, AZ, and Darrell (Dutch) (Ellen) Roy, UT; sisters Verla (Tootie) (Lyle) Collison, Onawa, Mary Lou (Harold) Knapp Chilaquin, OR and Phyllis (Jerry) Moore of Moorhead, IA. Interment was in Forest Lawn Hills Memorial Park, Covina, CA on Tuesday, February 25, 2003.
