Roland Chedester Killed In France 1944 Only Son of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Chedester First Soldier Casualty. The tragedy of war was brought directly to the people of Soldier Monday when the War Department notified Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Chedester by telegram that their only son, Sergeant Roland D. Chedester, had been killed in action in France on June 24. St. Chedester’s death is the first from the immediate Soldier vicinity in this war, and of course comes as a great shock to the parents, relatives and many friends. The telegram read as follows; Washington, D. C. 4:30 P. M. July 23. Jesse F. Chedester, Castana, Ia. “The Secretary of War desires me to express his deep regret that your son, Sergeant Roland P. Chedester, was killed in action of Twenty four June in France. Letter follows.” ULIO, the Adjutant General. Mr. and Mrs. Chedester had received a letter from their son dated June 21 in France, three days before he was killed. The letter arrived July 6. The family became worried when they did not receive another letter for Roland had seldom missed a week writing to his parents. Roland was born February 25, 1918 and was baptized in the Methodist Episcopal faith on April 16, 1933. He graduated from the Soldier High school in 1936, working then for his father on the farm until he joined the army on May 7, 1942. His infantry training was received at Camp Wolters, Texas, and Camp Blanding, Florida and he went to England October 1, 1942, the same year he entered the service He was 26 years old at the time of his death. Surviving are his parents, six sisters, and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. O. C. Chedester, and a number of other relatives and a host of friends. Roland was a fine soldier, an ambitious, highly respected young man. May his death in the defense of his country be more cause why the people of America see to it that there shall be no more war.
