Clifgard Isaac H. Clifgard, prominent farmer living south of Starbuck passed away on Thursday, June 1, following an operation. Funeral services were held Monday. We were unable to get the obituary in for this week’s issue but a complete obituary will appear in next week’s issue. Clifgard, Isaac Hendrick 1944 Glenwood Herald – June, 1944 Isaac Hendrick Clifgard was born in Dane County, Wisconsin on February 26, 1879 of the parents Johana and Andrew Clifgard. He was baptized on March 26, 1879 at West Church by Rev. Henrick Valdal and was confirmed on November 4, 1893 by Rev. Voldal at the same church. He grew to manhood at his home with his parents and in 1905 came here to Blue Mounds Township to make a home for himself and his family. He had purchased this farm two years before he moved out here. On May 2, 1905 he was united in marriage to Caroline Syverson and have 39 years lived together on their farm. On Tuesday morning May 25 he was taken seriously ill and rushed to the Starbuck Hospital, where it was found necessary to perform an emergency operation. All medical aid, special nurses and loving care by his family that ever could be done was done for Mr. Clifgard but the Angel of death called him away at 11:58 Thursday evening. Lingering 7 days after his operation. He reached the age of 65 years 3 months and 6 days. He was well prepared and was longing to go to his Heavenly Home where we again hope to have our family re- union. He is survived by his wife, one daughter Agnes (Mrs. Rudolph Himango) who has nearly always been at home with her parents. One son Clarence who lives in Blue Mounds Township, 2 miles west of his parental home. Also 3 grandchildren, Curtis, Audrey and Isaac Clifgard. He was a kind and loving father and always had the interest of his family at heart. His father and mother have both preceded him in death. He is survived by one brother Andrew of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. A sister Bertha (Mrs. George Fryer) of Wilmont, South Dakota. A sister Lina (Mrs.Rolstad) of Blue Mounds, Wisconsin and another sister Sophie (Mrs. Fred Thousand) of Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin. Four brothers: Iver, Anton, Christian and Gabe have preceded him in death. Mr. and Mrs. Clifgard, their children and grandchildren are all members of East Zion Church. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. K. R. Palmer on Monday at 1:30 at the home and at 2:00 at East Zion Church. A beautiful song “Shall we meet beyond the river” was sung at the home by the Healy Trio of Hancock. At the church the trio again sang “This world is not my resting place”. Services were conducted by the Rev. K. R. Palmer and Levine Tollefson sang beautifully “In Heaven Above” and a large amount of money was given to the missions and other church activities in memory of Mr. Clifgard. There were many beautiful flower offerings. The pallbearers were: Ole J. Vinge, Iver Reveling, Andrew Hilestrand, Oscar Odson, Alfred Tollefson and Anton Erickson. Interment was made in the East Zion Cemetery. Relatives out of town attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. George Fryer, Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Fryer, Wilmont, South Dakota, Knute Syverson, Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Syverson and Mrs. Guy Smith all of Minneapolis. Mrs. Alvin Stromseth of Atwater, Minnesota, Mrs. Olaf Nelson of Willmar, Minnesota, Mrs. Ella Tollefson of Canby, Minnesota.
