	Menta H. Courtney, 99, died Monday, October 26, 1987, at  Whiting, 
Iowa.
	She was born October 9, 1888, in Mohawk, Tennessee to William A. and 
Ida Belle (Claire) Hale, and came to Monona County in 1904.  On March 9, 1910, 
she married Jess J. Courtney in rural Onawa.    He died Nov. 13, 1960, in 
Whiting.
	Survivors include:  1 daughter, Mrs. Enoch (Helen) Oie of Phoenix, 
Arizona; 1 son, Robert of Whiting; 1 brother, G.R. Hale of Lovington, New 
Mexico; 2 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and 3 great great-
grandchildren.
	She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, 4 brothers, and 
4 sisters.
