He was born September 16, 1936, in Onawa, the youngest son of Lawrence Everett Ewing and Grace Tonetta Docken Ewing. He graduated from Onawa Public High School on May 13, 1954. On May 26, 1957, he married Hope Archer at Onawa. He served with the U.S. Marine Corps and owned and operated Don Ewing Advertising in Onawa. He was confirmed in Trinity Lutheran Church in Onawa and was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and Eagles Aerie #2270. A lifetime member of the Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA), Don began registering targets in 1960, the same year he first attended the Grand American shoot in Vandalia, Ohio. In both 1971 and 1972, he won the Hawkeye Doubles and All-Around titles, and in 1974 annexed another Doubles crown. In 1974 at Vandalia, he shot on the Central Team, which won the Zone Team Race. The following year he won the Preliminary Friday singles and, in the Class Singles, broke 200 while shooting on a record 997x1000 squad. On July 25, 1975, at age 38, Don was inducted into the Iowa Trapshooting Hall of Fame - the youngest shooter to ever be inducted and the first one to go in with minimum years. In July 1976, Don and his 14-year-old son, Brett, broke another record by becoming the first father and son in Iowa history to be on the All-American First Team in the same year. They attended the Grand American that year as guests of honor of Winchester Western Corporation, where they received specially engraved signet rings. In June 1977, the 25th Annual Billy Fawcett Memorial Trapshoot was dedicated to the All-American Don Ewing. During his 27-year shooting career, Don captured eight ATA State Titles - five in Iowa and three in Arizona - and earned five Midwestern Grand trophies. He was selected to 11 All-American teams between 1963 and 1985, and was Captain of the Iowa State Team four times. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Jeff (Kimberly) Johnson of El Toro, Calif., Jody Burgess, Mrs. Steve (Lori) Mathes and Kysa Ewing, all of Onawa; a son, Brett, of Onawa; a brother, Denzel, of Omaha; two sisters, Mrs. Larry (Shirley) Hogue of Harlan and Mrs. Don (JoAnn) Solberg of Moorhead, and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, September 10, 1987, at Faith Lutheran Church, Onawa, Iowa, with the Rev. Quentin Quanbeck officiating and Mrs. Syril Brown as organist. "My Way" by Frank Sinatra also was played as a special selection. Active casket bearers were Dan Hyatt, Jim McKneely, Bernard Farber, Dan Webster, Ralph Bean and Larry Mings. Honorary casket bearers were William Chapman, Dr. Vernon Helt, Gene Sears, Gene Morrissey, Charles Cannon, III, and Dean Johnson.
