H. Foss (Contributor’s date: 1944) The Soldier Sentinel Ole H. Foss, son of Hans and Ida Hanson, was born in Lovhoiden, Eistkog, Norway on January 12, 1866. At this place he was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. At the age of 18 years he came to America and settled in this community. He had been a resident of Soldier for 61 years, this time having been spent in farming and in the mercantile business. He was a merchant in Soldier for 25 years or more. On July 22, 1892 he was united in marriage to Sina Hanson. To this union four children were born, two dying in infancy. Surviving are two daughters, Palma of Soldier and Edith Hammersten of Sioux City, Iowa. As a pioneer citizen of this community Mr. Foss was always interested in civic and church affairs. He was widely known, and leaves a host of friends. For the past year he has been in failing health. He passed away at his home on Wednesday, October 18 at 2:00 a.m. at the age of 78 years, 10 months and six days. Funeral services were held at the Soldier town church Friday afternoon with Rev. Hoff in charge. Burial was in Soldier Valley Cemetery in charge of Ralph Oldham.
