Hanson, 80, passed away at the Onawa hospital Saturday evening, the result of a stroke she had suffered September 24. She had spent several weeks in the Denison hospital and a couple of weeks ago was moved to the Turin nursing home where she remained until she took suddenly worse and was taken to the Onawa hospital. Mrs. Hanson was one of the real pioneers of the community, coming from Norway in 1885. Funeral services were held at the Soldier Lutheran Church Monday, December 22 at 2:00 o’clock with Pastor F. W. Thomsen of Blair, Nebr., giving the sermon. Burial was in Soldier Valley Cemetery under the direction of Oldham Funeral Home. Pallbearers were: Leonard Hanson, Glen Hanson, Ronnie Hanson, Jere Graetz, Orvan Ulven and Marvin Ulven. Mattie Hanson was born in Torpa, Norway on September 30, 1878 and came to America with her parents in the spring of 1885. On October 9, 1897 she was united in marriage to Ole T. Hanson. After farming for a number of years they moved to the town of Soldier in 1936. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and remained steadfast in that faith to the end. She passed away Saturday evening, December 20 at the age of 80 years. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother, always thinking first of others. Surviving besides her husband are five children, Henry of Detroit, Michigan, Oscar of Rodney, Guy, Emma (Mrs. Maurice Graetz) and Mary (Mrs. Harold Ulven), all of Soldier; 16 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren. Three children preceded her in death. There is a long and winding road, Along which each must go It leads beyond the Hills of Time Into the sunset glow. But only for a little while Our loved ones leave our sight, For just beyond the hills They wait In God’s Eternal Light.
