Hanson, 99 years old, the oldest resident of the Soldier community, passed away Sunday afternoon at the Elmwood Nursing Home, where he has resided the past two years. Mr. Hanson was surprisingly alert up until his last hours and his memory all through his last years was amazingly good. The funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 25 at the Soldier Lutheran South Church. Pastor Harry C. Sorensen officiated. Mrs. Charles Dommer was soloist and sang “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Softly and Tenderly”, accompanied by Margaret Evenson. Interment was in the Soldier Valley Cemetery under the direction of Pearson Funeral Home of Soldier. Pallbearers were Marvin Ulven, Leonard Hanson, Glen Hanson, Jere Graetz, Norman Melby and Ronald Hanson. Ole T. Hanson was born at Aurdahl, Valdres, Norway on March 16, 1866 and was baptized that same year. He was confirmed in 1881 and came to American in October 1884. He was united in marriage to Mattie Field October 9, 1897. Eight children were born to this union. Ole was a pioneer of the community. He farmed in the Moorhead-Soldier vicinity from 1884 until retirement, when he and Mattie moved to Soldier. Ole was one of the builders of the Soldier Lutheran Country Church and was a member during his lifetime. He lived in Soldier until 1963 when he moved to the Elmwood Nursing Home in Onawa until his death at the age of 99 years, 5 months and 6 days. He was preceded in death by his wife Mattie, December, 1958; two sons, Henry, 6 months and Clarence, 1949; one daughter, Leona, 1934. Survivors include two daughters, (Mary) Mrs. Harold Ulven and (Emma) Mrs. Maurice Graetz, both of Soldier; three sons, Henry of Detroit, Michigan, Oscar of Rodney, Iowa and Guy of Soldier; a half-sister, Mrs. Carrie Moen of Rugby, North Dakota; a half-brother in Norway; 16 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.
