Ole J. Hanson Dies Suddenly        Contributor’s date:  1931

	Soldier people were shocked severely Sunday when news of the 
unexpected death of Ole J. Hanson was spread among our people.  Mr. Hanson had 
always enjoyed good health and was in the prime of life.  A stroke of heart 
failure which started at the Mrs. Holden Tanberg funeral Friday afternoon was 
the cause of his death.  He was a pall bearer at this funeral and had the 
first slight attack at the cemetery south of Soldier.  After driving back to 
town his condition became worse and he was taken to Dr. Junger for his first 
treatment and it was first realized that his condition was serious.  Soon 
after reaching home Mr. Hanson had a more serious attack.  Dr. Deering and a 
trained nurse were summoned and later Dr. Young, a heart specialist of Omaha, 
was called but all of the medical science these doctors could apply was unable 
to stop the attack or bring relief and he passed quietly away about 1:30 
Sunday afternoon.
	Mr. Hanson had been a prominent man in public life here for the past 
fifteen years.  He had served as a township trustee as a member of our school 
board for the past ten years and as a deacon in the Soldier Valley Lutheran 
church.  The most prominent of all his activities was his work on the school 
board.  He was a leader in school work and was a member of the board back in 
1923 when our present school was built.  After sering(sic) all of these years 
and being such an active and influential member of the board, he was re-
elected at our last election by an almost unanimous vote.  Such a wonderful 
endorsement comes to but few men in public life and it was very fitting as a 
tribute to the good work Mr. Hanson had done for our school.  He was a man 
that was not afraid to stand up for the things that were right and he was 
sincerely interested in all of the activities in our community.  He was a 
shareholder in the Soldier Community Building and was one of the good boosters 
for our organization.  No one has ever given more sincerely or liberally to 
the church.  He was a great basketball and baseball fan and when Soldier was 
in a game or tournament of any kind Ole J. Hanson could be counted among the 
fans that were heart and soul back of the Soldier team.  His interest in ball 
games run up to the big leagues and the world series.  It was the pleasure of 
the writer to be with him on trips to St. Louis and Chicago to see these games.
	Mr. Hanson was one of our most successful farmers and owner of a large 
tract of land near Soldier at the time of his death.  He was an expert cattle 
feeder and had topped the Chicago, Omaha and Sioux City markets on different 
occasions.  His business judgment was exceptionally good and was responsible 
for success in both his private and public business affairs.
	Ole J. Hanson did a lot of good things for all of us that live in the 
Soldier community and he will be greatly missed because of his death coming so 
unexpectedly, which he was at the peak of such an active and successful public 
career.
	Relatives that came from a distance to attend the funeral were Mrs. 
Frank Whittemore of Minneapolis, Mrs. M. J. Crandall, Mr. and Mrs. Halvor 
Hedum and Mr. and Mrs. Emil Johnson, all of Hartington, Nebr.
		OBITUARY
	Ole J. Hanson was born at Urskog, Norway, Feb. 3, 1878.  He was a son 
of Mr. and Mrs. John Hanson.  At the age of two years he came to America with 
his parents and has made his home in this community since that time.
	He was confirmed in the Soldier Valley Lutheran church, June 12, 1892 
and has always been a loyal and active member.
	His marriage to Hilda Wingate took place April 12, 1905.  Mr. and Mrs. 
Hanson were the proud parents of five sons.  The are:  Wallace, Hersel, Orvan, 
Willard and Clarion.
	He had served as a member of the school board for about ten years and 
had been president of this organization most of this time.  He had also been a 
member of the county board of education the past four years.  Besides his 
school offices, he had served as a township trustee and a deacon in the 
Soldier Valley Lutheran church.
	After an illness of only two days he was called by death Sunday, June 
14th at the age of 53 years, 4 months and 11 days.
	Besides the wife and children spoken of above, there are three sisters 
and one brother left to mourn his death.  They are:  Mrs. Hannah Whittemore of 
Minneapolis, Mrs. H. A. Wingate, Mrs. T. S. Thoreson and Carl Hanson of 
Soldier.
	Funeral services were held from the family home and at the church 
south of Soldier Tuesday afternoon.  Rev. Hoifjeld conducted the services.  
Pall bearers were members of the school board including the secretary and 
treasurer.
	Floral offerings were many.  Among the organizations in this list was 
the school board, patrons of the Soldier school, Soldier Community Building 
and Soldier baseball club.  Besides these there were many from individual 
friends and relatives.

sympathy and for the beautiful floral offering during our recent hours of 
sadness.  We also want to publicly express our thanks for the special music at 
the funeral services.  All of your many kind deeds have been very much 
appreciated by us.
