He had been taken there the Monday before after complications set in from a recent illness. Funeral services were held at Soldier Lutheran Church Friday with Pastor John C. Kilde giving the sermon. Burial was in Birmingham, Iowa, his old home town, with the Oldham Funeral Home in charge. Pallbearers were Harry Longlee, Clifford Lee, Page Carlson, Maurice Graetz, Hilman Olson and Andy Ballantyne. Bill, as he was known so well in the Soldier community, had never married. He lived in rooms back of his store for many years. For the past several years he did no prescription work. William Cameron Harness, son of Larance and Elizabeth Harness, was born Nov. 22, 1886 on a farm west of Birmingham, Iowa. He passed away at the veteran’s hospital in Omaha Sept. 4, 1957 at the age of 70 years. He received his education in Birmingham publc(sic) school and Des Moines Pharmacy College. Upon completion he came to Duer Drug Store at Charter Oak where he was employed until he enlisted in the Army in World War I and served as a member of the medical unit in France. Upon returning from service he came to Soldier where he operated the drug store the past 35 years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Charter Oak and the American Legion at Soldier. He is survived by three brothers, and one sister: Tom of St. Joseph, Mo., Elza of Placerville, Calif., Mack of Birmingham, Ia., and Mrs. Ada Belle Hoenshell of Birmingham; also a number of nieces and nephews.
