Hans Holt, one of Soldier’s oldest citizens passed away Monday afternoon after several weeks of intense suffering. Mr. Holt never recovered from a fall he took in the back yard of his home when a hard wind struck him last fall. He was eighty-six years old. This writer lived as a neighbor to Mr. Holt for more than thirty-five years and he was surely a very good man. Having lived in or near Soldier for fifty years Mr. Holt saw the hardships of the pioneer days and he lived to see them again through the depression years of the 1930’s. Mr. Holt was a very likeable man and his neighbors always enjoyed meeting and talking with him. His kind deeds were many. He was a charter member of the Soldier Valley Lutheran Church and was always a liberal contributor. Hans Holt is dead but the life he lived will be pleasantly remembered to his many friends for years to come. Hans Holt was born at Urskog, Norway on January 18th, 1852. He came to America on June 18th, 1880 with his wife and one child, Inga. He lived four years on a farm four miles east of Soldier, then moving to his farm one mile and a half east of Soldier where he lived for thirty-five years. In February 1915 he moved to the town of Soldier where he lived for nineteen years. On May 20th, 1872 he was united in marriage to Anne Amundson. To this union nine children were born, two of them preceding him in death. Hartwick died at the age of 9 and Oscar at the age of 2. Those left to mourn his loss are his wife and seven children: Mrs. Inga Mangen of Dunlap, Iowa; Oscar of Denver, Colorado; Albert, Ole, Mrs. Minnie Peterson, Severt, and Helga of Soldier, Iowa; thirteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was baptized and confirmed in Norway when a boy. He was a true and devoted father and husband. He was a member of the Soldier Valley Lutheran Church ever since it was established. He died quietly and peacefully on January 31 at the age of 86 years and 12 days. Funeral services will be held from the family home at 1:30 P.M. and at the church in Soldier at 2 P.M. this Thursday afternoon. Rev. Hoff will conduct the services. The remains will be laid to rest in the Soldier Valley Cemetery.
