She had been bedfast much of the time the Catherine (called Rena) Sweet Hong, the daughter of Dr. LeRoy and Rese Markey Sweet, was born at Salix, Iowa, May 16th 1886. She was baptized in the Catholic Church at Salix. At the age of seven years she moved with her mother and stepfather to a farm in Center Township, where they lived several years. Later they moved to Mapleton where she grew to womanhood. At the age of 16, she joined the Methodist Episcopal Church there, and has remained a faithful member all these years. She spent a year in Huron, S. D., and had had employment in the telephone office at that place. Returning to Mapleton she worked at the telephone office until her marriage to Nels Hong of Ute, Iowa, September 7th, 1904. To this union three sons were born, Milford M., Kenneth G., and Everett N. For many years the Hong family made their home in and around Soldier. Rena was a member of the Rebekah Lodge at Ute and was also a charter member of the Royal Neighbor Lodge at Soldier. She was preceded in death by a brother, Earl, who died in infancy, and her husband, Nels Hong, who passed away Sept. 8th, 1942 at Phillip, S. D. where they were living at that time. After Mr. Hong’s death Rena came back to Iowa and found employment at Albaton. While there she took membership with the Methodist Episcopal church and took an active part in the work of the church. In 1907 she purchased a home in Soldier where she had been living until a week ago. Becoming unable to care for herself because of ill health she was moved to the home of Mrs. Rachel Eneboe. Everything that kindness and thoughtful care could do to alleviate her suffering was done, but her illness was so serious that she passed away Sunday, Nov. 4th, 1951 at 6:00 a.m. At the time of her death she was 65 years, 5 months and 18 days old. She leaves to mourn her passing her three sons, Milford M. of Long Beach, Calif., Kenneth G. of Sutherlin, Oregon, and Everette N. of Ames, Iowa. Also three half sisters, Mrs. Lillian Barnes of Chula Vista, Calif., Mrs. Rose Gill of Houston, Texas, and Mrs. Eva Fletcher of Muscatine, Iowa, and three stepsisters, Mrs. Edna Keiner of Madison, S. D., Mrs. Bess Eubanks of Moline, Ill., and Mrs. Rena Beslough of Minneapolis, Minn. She leaves 11 grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and a host of friends. He sees when their footsteps falter, When their hearts grow weak and faint. He marks when their strength is failing, and listens to catch the complaint; He bids them to rest for a season, for the pathway has grown too steep; And folded in fair green pastures, He giveth His loved ones sleep. Weep not that their toils are over, weep not that their race is run. God grant we may rest as calmly when our work, like theirs is done. Till then we would yield with glad- Ness our treasure to Him to keep; And rejoice in the sweet assurance that He giveth His loved ones sleep. Contributions to the Victor Olson Fund in memory of Rena Hong are being taken. Anyone wishing to give may leave their contribution at the post office anytime this week.
