Johnson (From the collection of Vivian Norby Andersen) Funeral services were held at Soldier Lutheran Church Saturday, Feb. 22 for John C. Johnson, 67, of Moorhead who passed away at the Veterans’ hospital in Omaha last Thursday morning. He had been in ill health for several months. Pastor Harry C. Sorensen officiated at the 3:00 p.m. service. Mrs. Norman C. Hanson sang “Does Jesus Care” and “Beyond The Sunset”, accompanied at the organ by Miss Jean Amunson. The Soldier Valley Post No. 462 of the American Legion of Soldier attended in a group and conducted military rites at Sr. Clair cemetery at Ute. Gale Lee, commander was in charge. Casket bearers from the Legion Post were George Hanson, Andrew Navrude, Dolphin Clemon, Irvin Severson, Art Olson and Larry Swain. Arrangements were by Pearson Funeral Home. John Chris Johnson was born Feb. 1, 1896 at Ute, Iowa to John and Karen Johnson and died February 20th 1964 at the Veterans hospital in Omaha. He had entered the hospital on Tuesday. He had been a resident of the Moorhead, Ute and Soldier communities for the past 38 years with the exception of about four years when he lived at Sioux City. On Dec. 30, 1925, he was united in marriage to Edith Buckland at Sioux City. On July 25, 1918 he enlisted in the U. S. Army and was discharged in May of 1919. He has been a member of the Soldier Valley Legion Post No. 462 of Soldier for many years. Early in life he was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church in Soldier. He was also a member of WWI Barracks No. 1338 of Soldier. Survivors besides his widow include: two sons, Leonard Johnson of Sergeant Bluff and Wayne of Onawa; five grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Clara Mordhorst of Ute and Mrs. Emma Beauchamp of Harlan; one brother, Carl of Woodbine; three foster children, Elvin Johnson of Ute, Mrs. Leona Lariviere of Spokane, Wash., and Leslie Eugene Johnson of Tujunga, Cal. He was preceded in death by a son, Donald Lawrence, three sisters, six brothers and one grandson.
