A. J. JOHNSON PASSES AWAY JOHN H. JOHNSON, CITIZEN OF SPRING VALLEY FOR 61 YEARS DIED SUNDAY, OCTOBER 8, 1944 Funeral Services Were Held at the Lower Danish Church in Sioux Township on Tuesday of This Week. John H. Johnson of Moorhead, a father of three generations and resident of Spring Valley Township and Moorhead for the past 61 years passed away at his home in Moorhead, Iowa, Sunday, October 8, 1944, after an illness of a few weeks. John H. Johnson, son of Jorgen and Dorthea Jorgensen, was born at Ruberg, Denmark, October 3, 1868. He had enjoyed exceptionally good health until on July of this year when he suffered a stroke from which he never fully recovered. He immigrated to this country in 1880 and worked on a farm near Whiting, Iowa. On March 7, 1883 he united in marriage to Sena Jensen at her sister’s home, Mrs. Carl Jensen in Sioux township. They celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on March 7, of this year. They began their married life on a farm on the Jordan. After two years they moved to their own farm a few miles west of Moorhead. Here they reared their family of eleven children, six of whom preceded him in death. They moved to their present home at Moorhead in 1926. Mr. Johnson was a charter member of the Bethesda Lutheran church and had held several township offices. He was a man of fine character, and had every trait of a good citizen. He enjoyed the love and friendship of hundreds and had lived a life of service towards others. He had reached the age of 86 years, and 5 days at the time of his death. Left to mourn his departure are his widow, three sons, George, Representative Andrew J., and Ted, all of Moorhead. Two daughters, Mary Scott of Sioux City; and Lottie Fredrickson, of Moorhead; also thirty-one grand children and 20 great grand children and many other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted from Bethesda Lutheran church on Tuesday afternoon with his pastor Rev. Ludvigsen officiating. The pallbearers were his grandsons, Sgt. Howard Johnson, John Johnson, Wilson Scott, Emil Johnson and Virgil Johnson. Burial was made in the family plot in the church cemetery. This records the passing of another one of our beloved pioneers.
