Oscar had apparently enjoyed good health and his unexpected death was quite a shock to relatives and friends. Dr. Junger was called and pronounced his death due to heart failure which was caused from bad tonsils. He was a member of the Soldier Legion Post and had held his membership ever since the Post was organized here. He attended the county meeting at Ute recently. The Soldier Legion Post had full charge of the funeral services which were very impressive. Members of the Soldier Post made up the firing squad, pall bearers, color bearers, chaplain and commander. A bugler from the Dunlap Legion Post sounded taps. Following services at the church Legion members marched to their cars on Highway No. 183 where the procession formed for their journey to the cemetery at Ute. Oscar Adam Johnson was born on the J. C. Johnson farm seven miles south of Ute, Iowa on February 1st, 1892. He grew to manhood on the farm and was baptized and confirmed a member of the Lutheran church when a small boy. On June 27, 1918 he was enlisted in the U. S. Army to fight in the World War. He was in Camp Dodge, Des Moines for about one month and then went to New York and was sent oversea(sic) August 24, 1918 with Battery C339—88th Division Field Artillery. When the Armistice was signed he received his honorable discharge and came home in February 1919. On February 26, 1919, he was united in marriage to Gertrude Heminger of Manilla, Iowa. To this union were born three children, Elvin Leo, Leslie Gene, and Leona Marie. He was called home to be with Jesus and the loved ones who have gone before, on February 26, 1933. Oscar was a kind and loving father, a good neighbor, and always had a good word for everyone. His wife preceded him in death five years. He leaves to mourn his loss his three children, four brothers, Carl, and Clarence of Soldier, Martin and Johnny of Moorhead; three sisters, Mrs. Ole Torgerson of Soldier, Mrs. Wm. Mordhorst of Ute, and Mrs. Edmund Beauchamp of Irwin, Iowa; besides other relatives and a host of friends. Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord.
