The victim was identified as Vernon Burke Johnson, age 69. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. Harold Ganzhorn, Monona County medical examiner. Sheriff, Dennis K. Smith, said the drowning occurred between 11:30 and 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday, August 16, 1988. A complete obituary appears on another page of this week’s “Charter Oak-Ute NEWSpaper”. Vernon Burke Johnson, age 69, of Ute, Iowa, died on Tuesday, August 16, 1988, near Soldier, Iowa. Mr. Johnson was born on November 9, 1918, east of Moorhead, Iowa He married Leona Cooper on April 2, 1949, in Moorhead, Iowa. Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Carolyn of Sioux City, Iowa; a son and daughter-in-law, Merlin and Betty of Soldier, Iowa; one brother, Lyle of Pendleton, Oregon; one sister, Mrs. Ralph (Violet) Ulmer of Soldier, Iowa; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Rosemary, and his parents, Carl and Luella (Burke) Johnson.
