C. Junger Passes Away; Hundreds Pay Tribute At Services Dated November 29, 1951 (From the collection of Vivian Norby Andersen) Dr. E. C. Junger, 77, who had suffered a heart attack on November 20, died in the Lutheran hospital at Sioux City, Friday, November 23 at ? o’clock in the afternoon. He had been moved from his home in Soldier on Wednesday. Although he was unable to talk he remained conscious to the last and recognized a few intimate friends. The entire Soldier community is gripped with sadness and unbelief. He had seemed to be in perfect health right up to the time of his attack and during the day had made his usual contacts with his friends and had had his usual games of pool, a pasttime he had enjoyed immensely the past few years. To have the life of a man like Dr. Junger snuffed out so suddenly is a shock that is not easily forgotten—he had been in too direct a contact with so many people for so long a time. Next year would have been his fiftieth in the Soldier community, every year of his doctoring career having been spent here. The community had planned to honor him when the half century mark rolled around. Dr. Junger came to Soldier on a bicycle, just out of college. Immediately he set up a practice and in a short time was known as one of the finest doctors in the state. He worked hard and it is said that for days at a time he would get no more than an hour of sleep. He first used the horse and buggy for his rural calls and as cars came into use he kept up with the latest models. During the first 25 or 30 years of his doctoring he performed surgery, having his operating equipment in the present office which has been his headquarters for all these years. He abounded with community pride and spirit and it can be truthfully said that no man has done more for his town and community than Dr. Junger. He was especially fond of the school and fought hard for the new school building thirty years ago. When it was built he furnished all the playground equipment and in the last three years has replaced much of the old equipment and added new rides. He never turned down an offer to speak before the school or contribute in any way. He also gave freely to the church. He was a great student of the Bible and enjoyed discussing the Book with pastors and in Bible clases(sic). For many years he has given prizes to Sunday School classes with the best attendance records. He was highly instrumental in the erection of the Soldier Community Building, being its largest stockholder. In late years he sold his shares and donated the proceeds from the same back to the building. He served as president of Soldier Valley Savings Bank for many years, during our most trying times. His friends were many among patrons of the back and officials of other banks. Among other things, Dr. Junger was an outstanding republican. He was known far and wide in this respect. He was always ready to do battle for his party and their candidates. Dr. Junger was a man who got the most out of life because he enjoyed living to the fullest extent. He loved people and never spoke harshly or resorted to gossip toward his friends—a trait that we all should practice more. Among his hobbies were golf, bowling, hunting and pool. He will be sadly missed by his many former patients and by his large circle of other friends who enjoyed his many activities with him. Simple funeral services were held from Soldier Lutheran Church Monday, November 26, following a 1:45 service in the home. Rev. Everett Epperson of the Onawa Christian Church gave the sermon. As had been requested by Dr. Junger there were no flowers but several memorial wreaths were given. Burial was in the Jordan Cemetery under the direction of the Oldham Funeral Home. Hundreds of people turned out to pay their last respects. All business places closed and the school was dismissed at noon. Most of the doctors of the county attended in a body. Mrs. Harry Andersen was at the organ during the service, the only music used. Pallbearers were Roy Severson, Elmer Torgerson, John Dickinson, Harry Anderson(sic), George Britton and Olaf T. Olson. Dr. Emil C. Junger, physician and surgeon, passed away at 5:00 p.m. Friday, November 23, 1951, at the Lutheran hospital in Sioux City, at the age of 77 years and six days. Death resulted from a stroke, which he had suffered four days earlier. Emil Charles Junger, son of Anton and Rosina Schindler Junger, was born November 17, 1874 in Kleinspetersdorf, Austria. He emigrated to to(sic) Texas with his family when he was twelve, later coming to Charter Oak, Iowa, where he worked on a farm and completed high school. He graduated from Sioux City College of Medicine and on May 10, 1902, opened his first office in the hotel at Soldier. Within a few years he built a hospital, office and drugstore, with an adjoining home, on main street. Dr. Junger was completing his fiftieth continuous year of practice at the time of his death, a practice which at times had also extended to Lake View and Onawa. He was married to Caroline Elizabeth Carr December 10, 1903. To them were born six children: Esther Caroline, Ruth Elizabeth, Emil Emmet, Charles Joseph, who died in infancy, Rosina Mary Catherine, and Paul Quentin. Dr. Junger was a member of the Monona County Medical Society, Iowa State Medical Society, American Medical Association and the American Society of Surgeons. He had also completed advanced postgraduate work at Iowa City, St. Louis and Rush Medical College, Chicago. Survivors are daughters Esther Hall, Los Angeles; Ruth E. Junger, Chicago; Emil E. Younger, Onawa; Rosina Catherine Burton, Chicago, and Paul Quentin Junger, Duluth, Minnesota; as well as eight grandchildren and one great grandson.
