(Shorty) Kaatz, nearly 78, passed away at Knoxville, Iowa Sunday where he had been a patient the past few months. He was a resident of the Soldier community most of his adult life and was active in Legion and Masonic circles. Funeral service were held at Soldier Lutheran Church Wednesday, October 13 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Harry C. Sorensen officiating. Mrs. Norman C. Hanson was soloist and sang “My Jesus I Love Thee” and “Just As I Am.” Mrs. Charles Dommer Jr. was at the organ. Interment was in Soldier Valley cemetery under the direction of Pearson Funeral Home. Soldier Legion Post gave the military rites with Gale Lee acting Commander and Vernon Johnson, Chaplain. Masonic rites were conducted by Elk Lodge 586 AF&AM of Moorhead with Voyle Blackman as Worshipful Master and Park Moorhead as Orator. Bearers were Gordon Clemon, Bernard Thoreson, Stanley Frydenlund, Gale Lee, Don Pedersen and Loren Olson. Carl G. Kaatz, son of Karl Kaatz and Tina Elftman, was born at Sheldon, North Dakota November 13, 1887. He passed away October 10, 1965 at the age of 77 years, 11 months and 3 days. He had been a patient at the Veterans’ Hospital in Knoxville, Iowa since July 1964. He was confirmed a member of the German Lutheran Church and lived at Sheldon until 1912. On October 23, 1926 he was united in marriage with Gunda Ulven at Logan, Iowa. They made their home at Soldier until the death of his wife, Gunda, in 1960. He was a veteran of World War I and a member of the American Legion Post at Soldier. He was also a member of Elk Lodge 586 AF&AM at Moorhead and of the Order of Consistory at Sioux City. “Shorty”, as he was known to his friends, was engaged in soil conservation work until his early seventies. His five sisters and two brothers preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his passing, one adopted son, Carl Ulven, of Danbury; two adopted daughters, Mabel (Mrs. Lyle Welch) of Long Beach, California and Elaine (Mrs. Ival Outhouse) of Pisgah, and a niece, Arla (Mrs. Frank Wilson) of Ute, whom he raised from early childhood; also eight grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren, besides a host of other relatives and friends.
