AND MRS. BENNETT LEE (From the collection of Vivian Norby Andersen) The Soldier community was stunned last week end upon learning of the tragic death in a headon auto collision of Mr. and Mrs. Bennett Lee, former residents of this community. Mrs. Lee died instantly in the accident near Axtel, Nebr., shortly before noon last Thursday and Mr. Lee passed away Saturday. Another occupant of the car, Hans Andresen of Schaller, father of Mr. and Mrs. Lee’s soninlaw(sic), also died instantly in the crash. Mrs. Andresen’s wife was badly injured and another lady with them was hurt slightly. The accident happened as the party were on their way to Boulder, Colo. To visit a daughter. On a straight road near the intersection of highways 6 and 44 near Axtel a car driven by a Kansas man pulled over in the lane of the Lee car and the machines crashed headon. The driver of the other car was badly injured. Both cars were completely demolished. Mr. and Mrs. Lee were born in the Soldier community and lived here most of their lives. Since moving to Lohrville, Iowa they had accumulated considerable land and their farm which is being operated by their son, Virgil, is considered one of the best in the state. Two years ago they built a beautiful home in Lohrville. Funeral services were held at the farm near Lohrvil’e(sic) and at the Methodist church there Tuesday. Hundreds of friends and relatives attended and the church and basement was unable to handle the mourners. Burial was at Lohrville. Bennett Claire Lee, son of Mitchell and Lena Lee, was born October 25, 1894 in Soldier, Iowa. He died in Holdredge, Nebr. Oct. 23, 1954. Darl Magdeline, daughter of Holstein and Josephine Wingate, was born Nov. 26, 1895 in Soldier, Iowa. She died near Axtel, Nebr. Oct. 21, 1954 Bennett Claire Lee was united in marriage to Darl Magdeline Wingate on June 24, 1916 at Soldier where they were born and had lived considerable time following their marriage. Some years later they moved to a farm near Mapleton and in 1942 they moved to a farm near Lohrville, Iowa. Mrs. and Mrs. Lee were both baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Soldier. When they moved to Lohrville they joined and attended the Methodist church. They were active members and both enjoyed working in the church doing whatever they could to help the Church of Jesus Christ to which they were devoted. Mr. Lee was a member of both the Masonic and Odd Fellows lodges. Mrs. Lee was a member of the Rebekah Lodge and both were members of the Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Lee was also a member of the Auxiliary of the American Legion and was a member of the Women’s Society of Christian Service and held the office of the Status of Women. Mr. and Mrs. Lee were also active in the life of the community and helped to further many good causes. They were highly respected by the people of the communities in which they have lived and always built their lives into the very fibre of the community, helping to make it a better place in which to live. Mrs. Lena Lee of Moorhead, survives her son. He is also surved(sic) by one sister, Mrs. David Wilson, West Liberty, Iowa; five brothers, Elmer and George of Soldier; Marvel of Onawa; Amos of West Des Moines, and Orren of Moorhead. Mrs. Lee is survived by one brother, Lyman Wingate of Sioux City and one sister, Mrs. Jalmer Nelsen of Soldier. Mrs. and Mrs. Lee had seven children. Roma Joyce died in infancy. The surviving children are: four daughters, Phyllis (Mrs. Frank Powelson) of Omaha, Nebr.; Ardithe (Mrs. Norman Smith) of Jackson Heights, New York; Maxine (Mrs. Clyde Andreson) of Boulder, Colo.; Vernie (Mrs. Urban Rogers) of Des Moines; two son(sic), Virgil of Lohrville and Donald of Manson, Iowa. They are also survived by ten grandchildren: Rosemary and Janis Powelson, Jimmie, Jeanne, Craig and Thomas Andreson; Rodney Smith, Jo Ellen and Timothy Rogers, and Robert E. Lee. Among the survivors who loved them dearly are Raymond and Mary Kay Bristow of Lohrville, Iowa.
