He had been ill for several months and had been in and out of hospitals several times where everything possible was done for him. Henry was a familiar figure in the community where he farmed most of his life until late years. He was always interested in community events and was willing to do his share of gratis work when the occasion arose. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 4th at Soldier Lutheran Church. Pastor Maynard Moen conducted the services. Mrs. Norman C. Hanson sang “Nearer My God To Thee” and “Beneath The Cross of Jesus,” accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Harry Andersen. Interment was in St. Clair cemetery at Ute with arrangements by the Pearson Funeral Home of Soldier. Casket bearers were Orren Rude, Arthur Olson, Elmer and Martin Torgerson, John Helms and Jens P. Jensen. James Henry Lyons, son of James H. and Bell Lyons, was born Sept. 15, 1896 at Monmouth, Illinois, and passed from this life at the Onawa hospital where he had been a patient for the past three weeks. He had been in failing health for several months. At the time of his death he was 73 years, one month and 16 days of age. Mr. Lyons came to Iowa with his parents at the age of three years and since that time had been a lifetime resident of the Soldier community. He chose farming as his vocation and engaged in that work until recent years when failing health forced his retirement. He was united in marriage to Velma Smith on November 11, 1908 at Ute, Iowa. His wife preceded him in death on November 26, 1928. Survivors include two daughters, Miss Alma Lyons of Soldier and Mrs. Mildred Pirwitz of Charter Oak; one son Howard of Denison; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Florence Brown of Onawa; two brothers, Charles of Omaha, Nebr. And Leonard of Sioux City, and a number of other relatives and many friends who mourn his passing. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Velma; two daughters, Mrs. Edith Vahler and Merle; one son, Adolph, and one brother, Willard.
