He had been a patient at a Sioux City hospital since December 13. Funeral services were held at the Soldier Lutheran Church (country) on Saturday, February 1 at 2:00 p.m., with Pastor F. W. Thomsen officiating. Casket bearers were Larry Mathison, Russell Mann, Robert Mann, Thomas Baker, Don Geneski and Gene Brenden. Burial was in the Soldier Valley Cemetery with arrangements by the Oldham Funeral Home of Soldier. Mathew Mathison was born July 12, 1875 in Vardal, Norway. In 1881 with his parents, Kristian and Maria Mathison, he emigrated to the United States. They settled on a farm in Willow Toynship(sic) where he resided until about two years ago when he went to live with his daughter, Mrs. Gordon Mann, at Ute. Mr. Mathison had been in ill health the past six months and on December 13, 1957 was taken to the St. Joseph hospital in Sioux City where he passed away January 30, 1958. At the age of 25, he was united in marriage to Laura Hanson, who preceded her husband in death on Sept. 24, 1922. To this union four sons and four daughters were born, all who survive to mourn his passing. They are: Kenneth of Moorhead, Conrad of Soldier, Harold and Howard of Moorhead, Madeline (Mrs. Vernon Christensen) of Storm Lake, Bertha (Mrs. Gordon Mann( or Pisgah, and Nadine (Mrs. James P. Hartigan) of Ute. He is also survived by two brothers, Marcus of Omaha and Alfred of Irwin, as well as 18 grandchildren, six great grandchildren and a host of friends. As an infant in Norway, he was baptized in the Lutheran faith. As a youth he was confirmed in the Soldier Valley Norwegian Lutheran Church located two miles south of Soldier and to which he remained a faithful memer(sic). For many years he served as treasurer of the church as well as being active in the church choir and other musical groups. His community service included several terms as treasurer of Willow township school district and as assessor of Willow township.
