Death came as she was cleaning strawberries in her kitchen and was found by her husband when he came to the kitchen after lying down for a rest. Mr. Melby has been ill for some time. Mrs. Melby had just recently returned home from the hospital and was thought to be well on the road to recovery. She had lived in the Soldier community most of her life, coming to this country from Norway when she was 17 years old. She and her husband devoted their life to farming until a few years ago when they retired and moved into town. Funeral services were held Monday, June 6 with a short service at the home prior to the services at the Soldier Lutheran south church at 2:00 o’clock. Pastor John C. Kilde performed the ceremony. Interment was in the Soldier Valley cemetery with the Oldham Funeral Home in charge. A large number of relatives and friends attended the services. Christine Marie Melby, daughter of Mathew and Karen Lundberg, was born in Oslo, Norway, October 27, 1891 and passed away at her home in Soldier on Friday, June 3, 1955 at the age of 63 years 7 months and 7 days. She came to this country in 1908. On November 16, 1910 she was united in marriage to Oscar Melby. To this union seven sons and two daughters were born. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Olga, in 1926. Surviving besides her husband, are seven sons: Raymond of Soldier, Ear and Robert of Moorhead, Harry of Roselle, N.J., Clark and Wilbur of Dunlap, and Norman of Woodbine; one daughter, Mrs. Ella Schlensig of Soldier; 18 grand children and one great grandchild. Mrs. Melby was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Norway. She was an active member of Soldier Valley Lutheran Church.
