Death came at the Onawa hospital late Wednesday night, November 25 following a cerabral(sic) hemmorhage(sic) he suffered while working in his barn Wednesday forenoon. His death was unexpected, although he had suffered some with arthritis the past several months. Jalmer was one of Soldier’s better farmers, and was especially fond of livestock. He had always been active in community, township and church affairs and had held several offices in the township and church. Funeral services were held at soldier Lutheran Church Saturday, November 28 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Maynard Moen giving the sermon. Burial was in Soldier Valley Cemetery under the direction of Pearson Funeral Home. Mrs. Norman C. Hanson sang “I Heard The Voice of Jesus Say” and “I’m But a Stranger Here”, accompanied at the organ by Miss Janice Olson. Pallbearers were Basil Gibbs, Oscar Foss, Orson Edmonds, Wilton McDole, Roy Swain and Ardel Savery. Jalmer Melvin Nelsen, son of John and Martha Nelsen, was born at Soldier, Iowa January 18, 1901 and died at the Onawa hospital November 25, 1959 at the age of 58 years, 10 months and 7 days. He was baptized and confirmed at Soldier Lutheran Church. On December 15, 1923 he was united in marriage to Eunice Wingate. To this union four children were born, all of whom survive. He attended the Soldier schools and had farmed all his life. Survivors include the widow, Eunice; three daughters, Merces (Mrs. Gale Merrill) of Fairbury, Nebr., Vonda (Mrs. James Healy) of Omaha, Nebr., Joan (Mrs. Jack Smart) of Ralston, Nebr.; one son, LeRoy, at home; his mother, Mrs. Martha Nelsen of Soldier; three sisters, Mrs. Alfred Olson of Carroll, Iowa, Mrs. Darrel Parker of Milwaukee, Wis., and Mrs. Guy Hanson of Soldier; two brothers, Norval of Gettysburg, S. D. and Harry of Algonquin, Illinois; six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, a brother, Adolph, who died a few months back, and one sister, Lillian.
