She had been in ill health for some time and the past four and a half years had been in a nursing home at Carroll. Funeral services were held at Soldier Lutheran Church Monday, October 7 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Harry C. Sorensen officiating. Mrs. Norman C. Hanson was soloist and sang “I Love To Tell The Story” and “Nearer My God To Thee”. Mrs. Charles Dommer, Jr. was at the organ. Interment was in Soldier Valley Cemetery under the direction of Pearson Funeral Home of Soldier. Bearers were LeRoy Nelsen, Aimsel Nelsen, John Nelsen, Willard Olson, Ronald Hanson and Clayton Swenson. Mrs. Nelsen was born May 3, 1877 at Ringsaker County, Norway. She came to America with her parents, Ole A. and Karen Ulven when she was five years of age and had been a resident of Soldier most of the time since then. On July 20, 1893 she was united in marriage to John Nelsen at Soldier. He preceded her in death in February of 1922. Martha was a faithful member of Soldier Lutheran Church where she took an active part as long as her health permitted in the Ladies Aid and other church activities. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Soldier. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Clara Olson of Carroll, Iowa; Mrs. Agnes Parker of Mukwonago, Wisconsin and Mrs. Cora Hanson of Soldier; two sons, Norval Nelsen of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Harry Nelsen of Algonquin, Illinois; 27 grandchildren; 64 great grandchildren; one brother, Harold Ulven of Soldier and one sister, Mrs. Ella Woods of Lebanon, Oregon. She was preceded in death by two sons, Adolph and Jalmer and a daughter, Alma Lillian.
