Here she was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. In the year of 1862 at the age of 26 she was married to Christian Nelson. This union was blessed with nine children, five of whom preceded their mother to the great beyond. Her husband died in Norway in 1878. Since then she has remained a widow. In 1897 she immigrated to America with three of her children. They first settled at Carvin Kansas. They resided there three years and then moved to their present home at Soldier. Here she has resided ever since. She spent most of these years with her son, Ole, and kept house for him until he was married. Since then she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Julius Severson and her son Ole K. Nelson where she has always had the best of care. For the past sixteen years she has been blind, but she could read a lot from the Bible and hymn books which she had previously learned. She greatly enjoyed company and was always glad to have her friends call and visit. Although her hearing became very poor toward the end of her long life’s journey, her mind remained very clear and she had a wonderful memory. She has been a member of the Soldier valley congregation for a long number of years. She often attended communion services at the church and only twelve days before her death she attended these services. Death came Saturday morning at five o’clock, at the home of her son, Ole K. Nelson in Soldier. At the time of her death she was 97 years, 5 month and 7 days old. She was undoubtedly the oldest person laid to rest in the Soldier cemetery. The children who survive her are Mrs. Ole Evenson of Norway, Mrs. Julius Severson of Soldier, Mrs. Ellen Sorgerson, of Gordon, Nebr, and Ole K. Nelson of Soldier. There are also 39 grand children and 66 great grand children living to mourn her death. The funeral services were held from the Ole K. Nelson home and the church in town Monday afternoon. Rev. Sunner conducted the services. File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ia/monona/obits/n/nelson2177gob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/iafiles/ File size: 2.9 Kb
